If you're an international student studying in the US, you must be aware of the various visa regulations that apply to you. One of the most important aspects of studying in the US is gaining work experience through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT). Let's take a closer look at the definitions and requirements for CPT, OPT, and OPT STEM Extension.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

CPT is a program that allows students to gain practical experience in their field of study while still enrolled in their academic program. This program is only available to F-1 visa holders who have completed at least one academic year of study. CPT can be part-time or full-time and can be used during the academic year or during the summer break. The work must be related to the student's major field of study.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT is a program that allows students to gain up to 12 months of practical experience in their field of study after completing their academic program. This program is available to F-1 visa holders who have completed at least one academic year of study. The work must be related to the student's major field of study. Students can apply for OPT up to 90 days before their program end date and up to 60 days after their program end date. OPT FAQs answered here!

To be eligible for this extension, students must have completed a degree in a STEM field and be working for an employer who is enrolled in the E-Verify program. Students must also apply for this extension before their initial OPT expires. OPT FAQs answered here!
