- Prioritize applying to companies where you have some sort of connection. Examples*:*
- CodePath alumni work there or hiring partner of CodePath (Top Employers of CodePath Students )
- University alumni work there or hiring partner of your university
- Company is based locally to you
- You have a side project that is similar to their product
- Another connection works there
- Being strategic with how you apply to jobs
- Searching for jobs and managing the applications, events, and interviews that come with it is a marathon vs. a sprint…you want to use your energy strategically and look for roles where you can apply easily, but you also have the opportunity to stand out
- Many CodePath love using Simplify to help fill out tedious job applications online
- Some CodePath students enjoy how RippleMatch streamlines the job search process
- For cover letters and application essays, many students use our AI career coach to help them draft and refine essays that they then customize for their applications
- The most important thing to remember is that you have attempt to stand out in a sea of applications, and one of the easiest ways to do that is by reaching out to someone in the company either before or after you apply
- Practicing for behavioral interviews and technical interviews
- You want to practice your stories & techniques before you get an interview, but then also practicing tailored versions of your questions based on the company/interview research you do after you get an interview
- Tracking job search application data
- Tracking your own data/success metrics (plugging our Job Application Tracker here!) enables you to learn what is working for you in your job search and to consider different strategies to implement to improve you chances of success
- Periodically assess and get feedback on how your job search is going
- It helps to share success and performance metrics you’re tracking (and NOT just your pipeline, but the actual process of HOW you’re applying to jobs and HOW you’re finding companies and networking within those companies)
- By unfortunate design, the job search process does not offer a lot of feedback, so it’s up to you to create opportunities for feedback from peers, mentors, and trusted advisors…job searching may feel like a solo sport, but it’s actually much more like an apprenticeship where mentorship is necessary.
