Strategic Tips for the International Student Job Search
- Before you start applying, make sure your baseline resume is in good shape and tailored to the kinds of opportunities you will be applying for.
- Your resume should SHOW (not just TELL) about your technical skills and should also show involvement, leadership, or activities outside of your degree program to SHOW commitment community leadership.
- Apply to a wide variety of companies (look outside of big tech and in other industries), and take no more than 10 minutes to tailor your resume and cover letter to each position and company.
- Network with professionals in the industry, both in-person and through online platforms such as LinkedIn.
- Seek out companies that have a history of sponsoring H1Bs, and utilize resources such as job boards and university career services to identify these companies.
- Practice your interviewing skills, and be prepared to answer questions about your work authorization and sponsorship needs.
- CodePath offers mock interview weeks every semester, so be sure to follow our social posts and any emails we send out.
- Pramp.com and Interview Warmup offer free interview practice.
- Be flexible and open to different types of positions and industries, and consider internships or volunteer opportunities as a way to gain experience and build your network.
